Sensible governance from Richmond?
Posted on April 10th, 2010Since Attorney General Ken Cuccinnelli launched his nullification efforts the day after President Obama signed the Health Care legislation, I have been receiving a steady flow of constituent mail mostly critical (90+%) expressing feelings ranging from ridicule to outrage. Governor McDonnell’s ill-considered “Confederate History Month” proclamation has added volume to my mailbox—both in numbers and intensity of feeling.
Sadly, our elected leaders are projecting an image to the media of Virginians as right-wing ideologues and rejectionists. Gail Collins writes in her column (New York Times April 8, 2010) that “Virginia has been making big leaps in the category of general craziness.” Humorous, but we know this characterization is neither fair nor true.
My concern is that these incidents divert attention from the real work we have in front of us, fighting to build a progressive agenda for education funding, infrastructure investment, Commonwealth-wide, sustainable economic development and reform programs to increase the value and effectiveness of core government functions like Medicaid, corrections, mental health and child welfare. The recent tragedy in West Virginia also reminds us that responsible regulation is a vital complement to the business friendly environment we want to maintain.
I honestly believe that a large majority of Virginians agree what our overall goals should be in these areas, though we may disagree on the best way to achieve them. I intend to work with my activist constituents to define opportunities and venues to make tangible progress on building this progressive agenda in areas and on issues that interest them. Our energies should focus on finding common ground, rather than fueling partisan conflict resulting from political gamesmanship that is ultimately of little consequence.
I ran for Delegate last year because I was dissatisfied with the status quo in Richmond. This past legislative session has raised my sense of urgency on behalf of my constituents in the 38th District, who I am afraid will be disproportionately impacted by new administration policies. If you are able to contribute $50, $100, $250 or whatever, you will be supporting my efforts to define, communicate and make progress towards more sensible and responsive governance from Richmond.
Thank you for your support.

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik delivers opening prayer
Posted on March 11th, 2010Friends: You may have heard that I have invited Imam Johari Abdul-Malik from the Dar-Al-Hijrah Islamic Center on Rt 7 to give the opening blessing at today’s House of Delegates Session. Del Adam Ebbin has joined me in sponsoring this invitation. There has been much upset and many alarmist claims made since his invitation became public. A large group of anti-Muslim protestors will be gathering outside the Capitol this morning. At my suggestion, the Imam will be accompanied by a group from the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington (IFC). Let me be clear that I have invited the Imam as a representative of Dar-Al-Hijrah because the mosque has been active in creating a strong interfaith presence in our community and is a vital part of our community’s efforts to achieve tolerance and social justice. I am proud to stand by him today as he prays for peace in our Commonwealth and throughout the world. I have attached his prayer and will post a picture of his visit. I know you are supporting me in my efforts to give our district a voice here in Richmond and to demonstrate the value of our diversity. As always, thank you for your support.
