I am writing in regards to the amendment to HB30 concerning the elimination of Virginia Cooperative Extension programs in the more urban portions of the state. Your district has two very active 4-H clubs Fairfax and Kingsley.
I am a volunteer with the Kingsley 4-H Club. One of the most active in the area. We meet weekly (not monthly) with 25 club members ranging in age from 2nd to 6th graders. We have participated in the community garden program and maintain a garden throughout the summer and fall. We are presenting participating in the Kids UpFront cooking and nutritional program.
Our members are mostly free and reduced lunch students with limited access to truly enriching programs. The Kingsley Community has had a long and productive relationship with the VCE. The Kingsley Family Resource Center began 1999 and the 4-H Club has grown steadily since then. To eliminate this program would be detrimental to this at risk population. And in the long run cost Virginia Taxpayers more money if we can not keep some at risk youth from filling their after school time with less productive activities. Please consider carefully your vote on this amendment. 4-H is much more than cows and chickens.
